When I started out as a makeup artist, nude lipsticks didn't exist - the only way to create a good neutral lip was using foundation or concealer. But, as I say in my Ultimate Guide to Nude Lips film, today there are so many fantastic nude lipsticks available, in lots of different textures and as many colours as there are shades of foundation, with pink, orange, brown and neutral undertones.

Nude lipstick is very individual, one person's nude could be another person's orange or pink, so it can be a bit of a challenge to find the right one for you. But with a bit of trial and error, once you find the right shade that compliments your skin tone (neither too colourful or washed out), a nude lip can look fantastic.

Here are some of the nudes I keep in my professional kit, and the skintones they work well with...

Very Fair to Light Skin

Tom Ford Lip Color in Nude Vanille - a pretty pink-nude that's quite opaque, so makes a bit of a statement. This is one of the lipsticks I wore in my Ultimate Guide to Nude Lips film (it would suit a light/medium skintone too).

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Nude Collection in 40 - another pink-nude with a creamy texture (slightly darker skintones can also wear this for a sixties look).

Revlon Super Lustrous Matte Lipstick in Nude Attitude - a peachy nude with a creamy, matte texture.

Revlon Colour Burst Lip Butter in Creme Brulee - a very pale, neutral-brown nude. The sheer texture makes it super-wearable, and you can build it up for a stronger finish.

Deborah Lippmann Lip Color in I'm Every Woman - a neutral nude with a balmy, sheer texture (so again really easy to wear). 

Light to Medium Skin

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Penelope Pink - a warm, neutral pink nude with a creamy texture.

Burberry Lip Velvet in Pink Apricot - this is what I would call a 'lively' (i.e. not flat) nude. It has a pretty, peachy undertone.

Clinique Chubby Stick in Heaping Hazlenut - a neutral brown that I use a lot on shoots (and on myself). The stick applicator and balmy texture makes it really easy to wear, so it's a good one for everyday.

Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in Nude No6 - a neutral, beige nude (this is the first lipstick I apply in my Nude Lips film).

Lancôme Rouge in Love in Rose The 200B - a warm, neutral pink nude.

Tom Ford Lip Color in Blush Nude - another pinky nude, this is one of my favourites. The texture is creamy and long-lasting without feeling drying.

Lancôme L'Absolu Nu in 203 - a sheer, neutral pink.

The Balm Lipstick in Mai Billsbepaid - a pink nude with a creamy, opaque finish.

Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Biscayne Park - this is a great colour and perfect if you prefer a chubby pencil to a lipstick (it's not in the picture but I have it in my kit). It also looks beautiful on olive skintones.

Medium Skin

L'Oréal Paris Color Riche Privee Collection in Eva's Nude - a pink nude that looks beautiful on medium and olive skintones.

Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick in Nude Kate - a gorgeous peach nude.

Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Nude Collection in 43 - a brown/peach nude, with a touch more orange than the one above.

Deborah Lippmann Lip Color in LOVE - a neutral nude with a hint of pink and sheer but buildable colour.

Illamasqua Matte Lipstick in Bare - a neutral pink.

Medium to Dark Skin

Lipstick Queen Silver Screen in You Kid - a pink nude with a deliciously creamy texture.

Dior Rouge Dior in Grege - a flattering, peachy nude.

Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lip in Milky Way - a neutral nude with a brown undertone.

Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick HD in Camilla - a gorgeous, toffee-coloured nude.

YSL Rouge Volupte Shine in Beige Instinct - neutral brown nude with a sheer, sheeny finish that looks particularly gorgeous on darker skintones.

Glosses that suit everyone

If you don't want to make a strong statement, these nude glosses work on all skintones.

Charlotte Tilbury Lip Lustre in Sweet Stiletto - a neutral with a hint of golden peach.

Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector in Nude Shimmer - a neutral pinky beige - and Rosewood Shimmer - a pinky brown nude that's good for darker skintones.

Urban Decay Naked Nourishing Lip Gloss in Nooner - a light, neutral nude.
