Understand your Undertone!
Before you take our Tint Shade Finder Quiz to find your perfect shade, here’s how to figure out your undertone.
What is an undertone?
Your undertone is the predominant hue from the subtle mix of tones beneath the surface of your skin (regardless of surface skin tone) that determines which shades will be truly synergetic with your complexion.
With Enhancing Tint, there are undertones in four categories: Olive, Golden, Rosy and Neutral. Understanding your undertone is the key to finding a tint shade that fits seamlessly with your skin.
Your skin isn’t just one colour. Look closely and you’ll often see a beautiful blend of tones, from golden yellows and olive greens to rosy pinks, reds, blues and purples.
When you stand close to an oil portrait in a gallery, you’ll notice the artist has used a whole rainbow of shades to create realistic representation of skin, whatever the tone. Likewise, when I look at a face, regardless of skin tone, I see a whole range of colours… from greens, blues and purples to yellows, reds and pinks … almost like a mosaic.
Throughout my career, I’ve found that foundations and tints were always too basic and simplistic, either leaning too pink/red or too yellow, and this is not how I see skin. No one is just “very pink” or “very yellow”, there’s so much more going on. The most important goal for me when formulating my tint and foundation was to capture that complexity.
Not sure which undertone you are? Here’s a simple way to work it out...
The first step in finding the right tint for your skin tone is checking your skin in the correct lighting.
Make sure your skin is clean, prepped and hydrated, position yourself in daylight, ideally in front of a window. Angle your mirror slightly so you are looking upwards into it - this helps avoid shadows being cast across your neck. Make sure you can see your face, neck and chest area. This is important because most people have different undertones across their upper body. Personally, I have a golden and yellow-toned neck and chest area, with more pink tones in my face. Many people see a mix of tones but the goal is to identify the predominant hue overall.
The goal isn’t to match only your face. We want to find a shade that works in harmony with your whole complexion. Think of your perfect foundation or tint shade as the “complexion communicator” between your face and your neck/chest.
Predominantly golden undertones:
You tend to tan easily and quickly in the summer. Instead of burning, your skin develops a golden, bronzed glow.
If you have a golden undertone, look for a shade that supports these subtle gold notes in your skin, creating a seamless connection between your face, neck and chest. The right match should fit into your skin perfectly and enhance your natural warmth.
Predominantly rosy/red undertones:
Your skin is more likely to turn pink or red in the sun rather than tanning to a golden colour. You may also find that many foundations look too yellow on your skin.
If you have a rosy undertone, your skin has a subtle pink or red notes. This doesn’t mean your skin is simply "pink”, as rosy complexions often include a beautiful balance of colours. These shades would work perfect for rosy undertones.
Predominantly neutral undertones:
You're a balance of both warm and cool. Your skin doesn't lean strongly either way, often appearing more muted, and you can usually wear both warm and cool-toned shades with ease.
Neutral skin often works well with a wider range of shades because it doesn’t lean strongly in one direction. These Tint shades have a neutral undertone.
Predominantly olive undertones:
If you’ve always struggled to find a tint or foundation that matches you, whether it looks too pink, too red or too yellow then you are probably more muted and more olive.
If you have an olive undertone, these shades are especially worth exploring... They work beautifully across desaturated/cool olive, warm olive, and true olive skin tones... shades I found across my career and working with thousands of faces, were often overlooked... but, not here! You know that at the House of Eldridge... we do things differently!
