Liquid and cream highlighter

This tutorial explains how best to use liquid and cream highlighters to create a professional, chic and uber-luxe finish. Highlighter can give your skin a more polished look, whilst lifting and accentuating the contours of your face. When teamed with a little contouring highlighter will really bring your skin and face to life. A great starting point for any make-up look you might choose.

I love hightlighting products, BUT, I have enlarged pores, not super sized but big enought to notice them, and specially if I put some hightlighter on. So what do you say? Hightlighting is not for me or do I have another option? Thanks Lisa.

Hello, Lisa, I just love your videos. I like the way you talk, not too hyper or overexcited. I can really concentrate on the advices you give and watch you do the tricks without being irritated. Thank you. btw, love your nail polishes. Always fun and elegant.

@lisaeldridgedotcom hi lisa, i'm indian and have a medium olive complexion, and can't seem to find a peach highlighter in the us. i was wondering if you had a recommendation besides the one by boots. thank you so much for your videos, they've been a phenomenal wealth of information!

500dollas - Saturday 17th Jul 2010 6:22am

lisa, I absolutely love this video- it is so helpful, especially for someone who would like to look polished and really doesn't want to look done up- thank you! also, are there any other highlighters that you would recommend for olive-bronze skin tones? Becca isn't sold anywhere near me and I dont think that the light pink one I have is such a great idea after watching this ;)

Hello Lisa, thank you for your tutorial, it really helped me to apply highlighter correctly. your videos are always very very helpful and I'm so glad I found you on youtube. and by the way- you look absolutely gorgeous! :) Greetings from germany

benedettadc - Monday 12th Jul 2010 6:43pm

@lisaeldridgedotcom Hi Lisa, thanks a lot for your reply, and my apologies: I only saw it today, so here is my very belated little thank-you note! I will try your suggestions... love your videos and your take on makeup! Have a nice Summer day (and more to come)-hopefully not too hot: we are melting here in Northern Germany!

dianalupulesc - Monday 5th Jul 2010 10:05pm

@lisaeldridgedotcom That would be great Lisa! We all love the product, but hate the packaging. I would rather have the amazing product in the same packaging as Mac's lustre drops. That way the amount of product being used can be easily controlled. Thanks Lisa :)

SomosDePapel - Wednesday 30th Jun 2010 8:24am

Great video! I've learned heaps, thank you! :) I have oily skin as well so I wonder how to go about using powder highlighters with other powder products. Would I use powder foundation, powder highlighter, blusher...how do I fit my concealer in there? TIA! :)

beenu54 - Tuesday 15th Jun 2010 1:52pm

another fab video lisa, have taken notes from it and will buy the becca ones you mentioned, do they have one for light asian skin

dcali174 - Thursday 10th Jun 2010 10:56pm

you are a wealth of information...i really appreciate the way you have everything explained. it draws the whole makeup applying experience together. two thumbs up i will be watching all videos from now on!

TheGlossyglitz - Saturday 5th Jun 2010 9:37pm

Great tutorial Lisa. Thank you so much.

KerryMarie3 - Tuesday 1st Jun 2010 7:23pm

what powder did you use?

songofangels777 - Tuesday 1st Jun 2010 6:24am

lisa thank you for your outstanding tutorials. I have pretty good skin for a 48 yr old with only fine lines around my eyes/ eye socket area but i also have largish pores and when i do highlighting it makes me sad, i feel like i'm just emphasizing everything, but i want to do glowy. Should i just not worry and go for it?

badrobot88 - Monday 24th May 2010 5:54am

@lisaeldridgedotcom lisa you are amazing! i cant believe u find the time to reply to all of our questions thanks so much for replying to my comment :)

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 22nd May 2010 3:15pm

@badrobot88 I agree, the product is fabulous but the tube is a challenge to say the least. I will pass your comment on to the product development team. Thanks for commenting

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 22nd May 2010 3:13pm

@annpchlr I wouldnt use it neat all over your skin but you could definitely add some to your moisturiser and that would work well

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 22nd May 2010 3:12pm

@goddess002 the Becca one is the only highlighter i have found that contains no pink or yellow, its totally neutral and pale.. shame its so expensive : ( The body shop one is pinker than this but could look great if your colouring is pale with pink/blue undertones. The Boots No7 one comes in pink and warm apricot so you can choose which one suits your skin better and is a gorgeous texture.

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 22nd May 2010 3:08pm

@benedettadc you can either use a liquid/cream highlighter after your moisturiser and then buff your mineral powder foundation on top - the glow should show through. Or you will have to use a powder highlighter like Laura Mercier after your powder foundation application x

LovePeaceandLipGloss - Friday 21st May 2010 4:52am

This was so helpful, you did an amazing job~ xxG

benedettadc - Tuesday 18th May 2010 4:04pm

@lisaeldridgedotcom Hi Lisa, I have a question I would like to ask you. I wonder what would be the best way to apply a cream highlighter with a loose mineral foundation. Up to now, I have used the highlighter as finishing step, patting it l with my fingers. But your video made me curious of other ways. Could I apply the highlighter with a brush on top of my foundation as you did, or even apply it over my moisturizer, and then buff my mineral foundation? Many many thanks again! :)

goddess002 - Saturday 8th May 2010 6:29am

The Becca highlighter looks great but it's too expensive. Does the body shop one have similar color & texture? I really love the glowy effect.

littlemissfunky1 - Thursday 15th Apr 2010 10:08pm

I am using benefits high beam which is nice too.

annpchlr - Wednesday 14th Apr 2010 11:44pm

Lisa, I am quite pale with dry skin; would you recommend using the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Pearl all over the face instead of a moisturizer under mineral foundation to get a nice glow (I use the Laura Mercier Loose Mineral Powder and it always looks a tad flat on my dry skin)? Thanks in advance x

badrobot88 - Tuesday 13th Apr 2010 8:20pm

lisa please make the no.7 highlighters come in a pump bottle again, I love the product but the brush is horrible and the bristles get stuck together after one use! so difficult to use :( x

nisakornp - Monday 5th Apr 2010 7:21pm

Thanks for all of your wonderful vids. I learned a lot and am practicing what I have learned from your tutorials. You are very skillful.

odedaj - Friday 2nd Apr 2010 1:10pm

@lisaeldridgedotcom lisa, i tried to get the boots no7 in peach but of course several stores only had it in pink...may i have another peach highlighter recommendation? thanks so much!

monobeserk - Wednesday 31st Mar 2010 9:48am

just the tutorial i was looking for! i love the natural glow you can achieve with your way of highlighting and it looks so beautiful on you! i would very much like to know which cremeblush you used, i was thinking of buying one because i normally use powder blush but i very much like the look of the cremeblush!

lisaeldridgedotcom - Tuesday 30th Mar 2010 12:43am

@ahhiitsalex The Elf one is frostier. The Becca ones are quite sheer and more subtle

ahhiitsalex - Tuesday 30th Mar 2010 12:33am

Hi, I just bought the Elf All over Color Stick in Toasted based on your recommendation. I was wondering if you think this is comparable to Becca's cosmetics in Topaz? Do they both give a subtle highlight or is the elf more "frosty?"

flushed1977 - Sunday 28th Mar 2010 9:05pm

Boots No.7 'Skin illuminator' in shade pink is awesome too. especially for pale skin Lisa, love your videos! Please dont stop! xx

ohchimpanzeethat - Monday 15th Mar 2010 2:38pm

Hi Lisa, what cream blush did you use? Thanks. x

186tele - Saturday 13th Mar 2010 11:21pm

Hi lisa, thanks so much for the videos. I'm an NC20 in MAC, would you recommend the pearl or opal for the becca ssp??

merylynmagic - Saturday 13th Mar 2010 5:07pm

I LOVE your videos!! I'm learning a lot from your tips/tricks! Thanks :)

Shelley9090 - Thursday 4th Mar 2010 8:41pm

Wonderful video. I subscribed and look forward to more of them. Thank you.

mavilla221 - Thursday 4th Mar 2010 5:51pm

My new found pro! How awesome and professional so happy I found you. My question is what nail color/brand are you wearing in this video.??? Loving you in Los Angeles

lisaeldridgedotcom - Thursday 4th Mar 2010 8:38am

Oh I didnt realize they have chunks of glitter, in that case its a big no no then! Look for something without the glitter factor lol! Thanks so much for all your comments and for watching my videos. Lisa x

pendu87 - Thursday 4th Mar 2010 1:53am

thank you for getting back to me! im just worried that the cream color bases have chunks of glitter which is painful to look at on someones face lol.. thank you! please make more videos :)

lisaeldridgedotcom - Wednesday 3rd Mar 2010 8:36pm

@zaraanri it's not something I would particularly recommend no. This is a very flat area of your face so its not an area where there is much to highlight/contour. I would however recommend adding a touch of highlighter to your moisturiser and using all over if you are trying to achieve a more dewy look to your dry skin. Only a very small amount though otherwise you will look too shimmery x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Wednesday 3rd Mar 2010 8:33pm

@pendu87 Its 'muse' by Illamasqua on my nails. I havent tried the Mac cream colour bases as highlighters but the texture is good so its more a case of finding a good, flattering shade for your skin tone x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Wednesday 3rd Mar 2010 8:30pm

@lillieloves yes it can be good if you are very pale with a slightly pinkish undertone x

pendu87 - Wednesday 3rd Mar 2010 2:55pm

what are you wearing on your nails? also, mac's cream color bases, are they good stuff for highlight?

noppiichi - Tuesday 2nd Mar 2010 12:18pm

I have that the body shop radiant highlighter! guess it doesnt really suit my skintone.. :(

babicakes16 - Monday 1st Mar 2010 2:10am

lillieloves - Sunday 28th Feb 2010 10:12pm

kisstheskyagain - Friday 12th Feb 2010 1:02pm

Dear Lisa, thank you so much for your videos, especialy for basics series and for morning after! I adore these fresh looks you do. Less is more! And I must say the secrets about highlighters are very helpful, I was always wondering how some women look so chic and glowing. I showed this video to my friend and she was also amazed to know that. You explain things very good and clear, and you are so natural beautiful)

TheBabyMouse - Friday 12th Feb 2010 1:44am

Hi lisa, I hav just watched all ur basic vid's and enjoyed got some great tips I look forward to more uploads from you :0) Thank x

zaraanri - Tuesday 9th Feb 2010 5:58pm

i have super dry skin..have to use a heavy moisturizer before applying foundation. i have seen some people take the highlighter upto the forehead..atop the eyebrows and a bit in the center. would you recommend it?

zaraanri - Tuesday 9th Feb 2010 5:55pm

i still use revlon skinlights in peach, cuz i have medium dark skin. I never thought of using a brush, assumed that fingers would work better, and never thought of taking it towards cushion of the cheek either...it must look really natural. thanks.

nattydotcom - Monday 8th Feb 2010 9:16am

Do you know if you can get a similar effect with any powder illuminators? I use mineral powder foundation and putting cremes over it just doesn't work. Also, really amazing videos, I really like your philosophies on how makeup should mimic natural beauty.

moodeve - Sunday 7th Feb 2010 12:56pm

Just discovered your channel, and this vid was such a treat to watch. I'm a highligher and foundation fan - so this vid was very encouraging and interesting to watch. Thanks...froma new subscriber!

glefeeo - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 9:46pm

Thank you so much!

ostiaroma - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 6:20pm

Thank you so much!

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 3:55pm

Definitely if you avoid the more metallic and glittery ones. Look for teeny, tiny pearl in a sheer textured base which blends very well into your skin

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 3:53pm

They show up more under flash, so make sure you choose the right product (not too metallic or glittery), its matches your skin tone well, you blend all the edges seamlessly and you apply it sparingly. When its done well it makes you look incredible in photos. I use it on all my celeb clients and I wore the becca product for my wedding! Lisa x

ostiaroma - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 3:46pm

very informative video, beautifully presented, well done, if I may ask a question, would you recommend highlighters for mature skin, or would they show up problems more?

luckyclover012 - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 6:30am

the lighting and video quality is excellent! very professional!

glefeeo - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 2:22am

great video! how well do these photograph? ie for wedding photos? thanks

pomdamour - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 1:53am

thank you ! i'll try this !

sarahlittlecutie - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 1:10am

Great video I love your videos. Am going to get that becca highlighter asap!

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 12:31am

@MACuriosity Thanks for watching! My nail polish is Muse by Illamasqua x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 12:26am

@pomdamour Keep the highlighter away from the hollow under the eyes and focus on the outer edge of the upper cheekbones and brow bone - in a small semi circle lifting up and out. Then conceal your dark circles. When the highlighter catches the light it will draw attention up and away from the circles and detract from this area. Good luck x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Saturday 6th Feb 2010 12:20am

Yes, lots of thin, blended layers is my favourite kind of skin make-up to give a kind of 3D effect and make the skin look fabulous!

lisaeldridgedotcom - Friday 5th Feb 2010 11:16pm

@gemsmaquillage Thanks for your comment, I'm so happy you found the video interesting! Youre right, the YT make-up loving community is genuinely lovely! x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Friday 5th Feb 2010 11:12pm

@odedaj I'm pretty sure the Boots No7 peach one is available a Target stores throughout the US. Let me know if it isn't and I'll think of something else similar for you. Thanks for watching x

bubblegarms - Friday 5th Feb 2010 5:44pm

great video, I usually like to use a gold based highlighter (I use MeMeMe beat the blues) which is quite nice for my skin, I also have the frosty pink one by benefit but dont wear it much, now I know why :)

asianlashes - Friday 5th Feb 2010 4:36am

This is absolutely amazing beautiful! Can you please do a video on how YOU apply bronzer, since many of us are fair skinned like you! <3

pomdamour - Friday 5th Feb 2010 2:18am

great tutorial but i have very dark circles (brownish ones...) and they are kind "deep" , so when a try to put some highlight on my cheekbones, my dark circles looks darker and "deeper" even with concealer... any advice?

nadine924 - Friday 5th Feb 2010 1:52am

thanks! this was really helpful

MACuriosity - Friday 5th Feb 2010 1:13am

Great video!! Can you please let me know the brand name and color of nail laquer you are wearing..its a gorgeous color. thanks!

mizzworthy - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 10:50pm

Great video as always - the brush you used looks great, and I love the look of the becca highlighter... With a powder highlighter, I assume you would blend this in over any finishing powders but before powder blushers?

mgparis - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 9:46pm

Thanks so much for making these wonderful videos, very helpful! You are beautiful as well as talented, by the way :) I recognise your name from many UK magazines, I've probably been following your work for years! thanks again :)

ChooLove09 - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 8:08pm

Finally! I now know what to do with my highlighter. I've had it for about 4 months but have never used it because I was scared of looking greasy/like a glitterball. I'm going to have a play with it this weekend. Thanks so much :) xx

lisaeldridgedotcom - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 3:24pm

@filthygorgeousmakeup dont take the cream highlighter too much onto the cheeks. Keep it more on the high point of the cheekbones and around the eyes as this is not usually a oily area and also it looks best there. This is what i do as i've got oily skin too! I'm really happy you like the vid x

lisaeldridgedotcom - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 3:17pm

@stellarstrawberry19 well spotted! Everything I use or recommend I do so because I genuinely believe they are good. I would never endorse a product I didn't use myself x

filthygorgeousmakeup - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 3:00pm

Great video! What would you recommend for oily skin that needs powdering? I always find that with a cream highlighter it looks beautiful in the morning, but by the end of the day my face looks oily if I haven't powdered it, but if I do use powder on the cheek it takes away the effect of the highlighter.

hollyYMBB - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 2:51pm

stellarstrawberry19 - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 2:04pm

I recognised that foundation brush as boots no.7 because i have the concealer brush that matches. I Know that you work (ed) at No7 re-designing the makeup etc, and I couldn't help but notice, that you not only didn't endorse it, but you didn't even show that this was a no.7 brush you were using. That makes me think that if you use it, and you're not trying to advertise it, it must actually be a good brush?

lisaeldridgedotcom - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 1:52pm

@Cupcake4me I find High Beam way too pinkish white. I prefer their moonbeam one as it has a mixture of yellow and pink pearl. You should try the peach one by No7 as it has yellow, pink, lavender and green pearl. The yellow and green will sit well with your skin and the lavender pearl really lifts oriental skin. Only use a small amount. Thanks for watching and commenting x

fiammag84 - Thursday 4th Feb 2010 1:13pm
