In the past year I have spent quite a bit of time researching illustrators for various projects. There are a lot of amazing illustrators out there and I have about five peoples work that I absolutely love and follow religiously. Someone whose work really caught me eye is Stephen Campbell, not so much for his straightforward illustrations (which are also fab) but for his stitched work which is so much fun.
This work centers mainly around the worlds of fashion, beauty and fragrance. He has some really beautiful pieces taking inspiration from iconic fragrance bottles.
This is a very small selection of some of the simpler stitched illustrations in this portfolio. I just love how they appear so homemade and crafty and yet so chic and sophisticated.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

He could probably do it by hand, but the regularity of the stitches makes it look like machine stitches. You can get an attatchment for most sewing machines that allows you to do free machine embroidery - its actually quite simple to use, but very difficult to get the control he has! (When I use it its just a sqiggly mess!)

Fab, fun work! Also check out the equally wonderful (and occasionally naughty) work by Lou Trigg, on www.screaminglulu.com, who does brilliant 'stitchures', some depicting real personal ads, and celebrities!

@Kimberley Yes I love Stina's work, she worked on some packaging for SpaceNK a couple of years back which was just gorgeous. Some others I'm loving at the moment are Jo Ratcliffe, Izzy Kingels, Vania Zouravliov and Sheeley Reed (Shelly is more artist than illustrator but I adore her drawings). Some of these are less simple in their approach but the imagination is astonishing. Good luck with your course x @ Janet I dont actually know how he stitches. Versions of most of the designs are already in his drawing portfolio though. Really pleased you liked it so much! x Thanks to everyone else for posting comments too, pleased you liked his work x

These are wonderful Lisa, thanks for sharing. I'm just finishing my Graphic Design HND and hope to do illustration in the future. You have probably come across some of Stina Persson's work - she's my favourite. I much prefer it when designs aren't over complicated. Love to know who are the other 4 in your top 5? x

Do you know how he does these? Does he do a drawing and then put it into one of those fancy sewing machines that stitches it out or does he stitch by hand? I really love them. I decided to add the mood lashes as my desktop background.

I love the stitched illustrations too, so original, so simple and touching: he manages to capture and recreate the gist of the subject! thanks Lisa, for the brilliant discovery of that talented illustrator
