Lisa Loves - A Beauty Swoon!

It takes an awful lot these days to get me excited about a beauty product. It could be the colour, the texture, the originality or the practicality but when its all at once my oooh's and aaaah's can be heard for miles! The arrival at the House of Eldridge of the new YSL Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stains, saw such a moment.

First up the technology and texture is something brand new in the lip arena. Creamy and glossy but not too glossy, long lasting in a way that actual gloss never truly is and fabulously moisturising in a way that stains usually are not. The packaging could easily be mistaken for a nail polish bottle, the applicator is a flat, petal shaped spatula that hugs the curves of your lips perfectly.

The colour palette is also extremely desirable. The twenty pearl-free shades feature everything from a seriously pale, baby pink to wearable 'like natural lip colour only better' shades through to the richest cyclamen and bright orange. So far I've worn No2 (a bitten lip shade), No8 (an off the chart hot orange) and No17 (a beautiful lilacy pink) and loved all three. You can almost feel the creamy, long lasting formula locking on and clinging to your lips which is quite reassuring. I often find the sweet fruity fragrance of glosses a bit cloying but this one, although quite perfumed, didnt bother me at all.

A stain is the most modern way to wear lip colour and this, in my opinion is the most modern of all stains.

Verdict - Expensive (£22.50) but this formula is so new and cutting edge you wont find a cheaper drugstore or highstreet version anywhere - yet. An ab fab 10/10!

Lisa, how do these measure up against the Chanel Laques? I know the Chanel ones are getting discontinued (by the way, I just can't understand why because it's a phenomenal product!) and the YSL are just coming out, but how do these compare? (I grabbed the Laque in #73, #74, and #75 - that super popular dragon colour - before they were all gone!)

Hi Lisa, I'm bummed that the VLA compact is not suited for combo, sometimes acne prone skin. I'm not pleased with the liquid and Perfection. I've been waiting to try this for more coverage. But I'd o love the YSL stains/gloss. Thanks for the recommendation!

Ordha - Wednesday Mar 14th 2012 3:38pm
Ah Lisa ! You're such an asset to any make-up brand even those you're not working for ! I was waiting for this lip polish as they are called here in France to come out to test it and then, forget about it. And then you post about it and here I am, nearly running to the nearest Sephora to get one ! I bought n°3 Brun Cachemire first and found the color to be very chic and the texture such as you describe it. I was surprised by the fragrance/taste but got used to it and finally liked it. Of course, as it goes with all my make-up crush, I needed more and went again to buy n°19 Beige Aquarelle, a very natural light beige which is almost invisible on my lips but gives them a very nice looking shine. Maybe I should try a more flashy color next time... Nonetheless, I'm waiting to see how they will react when the heat comes (fortunately very soon here in the south of France !). I hope it won't leave a nasty white trace on my lips as some products sometimes do. Thank you again for your wonderful advices and this great website.

Ida - Wednesday Mar 14th 2012 2:19pm
I want them now!!!!! Would be really helpfull with a video where we see them all on :)

Anna - Wednesday Mar 14th 2012 6:30am
Please do a look with one of those! Pretty please :)

Silvia - Wednesday Mar 14th 2012 2:19am
This is the most interesting, beautiful and comforting lip product I have come across for years! I was (lol) magicly and immediately brought to the N17 colour and I love it. I will definitely have to buy some more few shades, because it´s amasing on my lips. The colour stays so well and the texture... ..aaawh the texture leaves a lovely feeling on my lips! Thanks for sharing with us. Greeting and big kisss from Portugal :)

@Amanda, I have No 7 and No 10, and while I like them both, I LOVE 7. It's amazing. 10 is good, too, but 7 wears extremely well throughout the day. For a tonal look, I've been pairing it with NYX's Cream Blush in Tickled with nice results (I'm fair-skinned); expensive lippie, cheap cheek.

Amanda - Tuesday Mar 13th 2012 3:22am
My birthday is coming up in a few days so when my friend asked me what I wanted for my birthday, of course, I told her these!!!! I think I want #7... it's a very pretty coral color. I hope you feature them in your videos soon! :)

Jas - Monday Mar 12th 2012 4:35am
I already own one shade of this and love it! The price is a bit much but I think it's totally worth it. Can't wait to try new colors.

Jillian - Saturday Mar 10th 2012 9:13pm
Oh, I've been stalking these for a bit, but couldn't quite justify the cost. Now that I know they have your endorsement, I'm more inclined to take the plunge--and you've even recommended the colors I was eyeing! I would love to see you feature these in an upcoming video!

Christy - Saturday Mar 10th 2012 3:28pm
Hi Lisa, I can't wait to see your recommendations for 'new generation' foundations, like you mentioned in the Clemence Poesy video! Am excited to hear what you're recommending :)

Annie - Saturday Mar 10th 2012 2:46pm
Lisa I'm in love with everything about you. I love your personality, your blog, your videos and you inspire me so much. I really like lip stains, I can't wait for this one come to Brazil ^^

stef - Saturday Mar 10th 2012 2:31pm
Hi lisa!!!could you please put some photo with you're lips and the glossystain so we can see the pigmentation of the product or you can make a video on these..I'll really appreciate it!I want to buy some but I don't know if pale colours are going to show also on pigmented lips..

Janet - Friday Mar 9th 2012 7:10pm
Will you be doing a look with the orange glossy? I’m always drawn to the brights but never sure how to wear them without someone thinking… 'wow her lips are bright', instead of saying great look. I’m pretty sure i remember a video with an orange lip in your collection of videos… I must go view some! Janet xOx

Tanveer - Friday Mar 9th 2012 6:33am
Lisa, I'm sorry for writing my query here on an unrelated post, but I didn't know where else to put it. I have learnt so, so much on makeup from you! Thanks a lot for talking out the time & doing all these videos :D Can you please do a tutorial video (or if you don't have the time even a blog post will do) on different eye shapes and certain tips or tricks for them? I have deep set eyes & find it very difficult to do a smoky look on them without making them sink in further.

Jeanette - Thursday Mar 8th 2012 4:07pm
Went to try them yesterday as well :-) I have quite dry lips, but use lip balm to keep them soft, but I still cannot use all lipsticks as some are too dry. These were not, they are quite creamy. Fantastic staying power, still on after a couple of hours with coffee and a croissant, so a good choice for a dinner. They are most appropriate for a night out, or maybe for students. But they are too glossy for daytime use in the office. The colours are a bit vivid too, even the most natural colour was too bright for daytime use (no. 5). But I am fair skinned, so maybe they are not as bright on everybody. But I will look forward to some stains with less shine and the same staying power!

I love the look of these lip stains but would like a natural 'bitten lip' colour - these all look quite bright and they are quite pricey to make a mistake with... I'd love to see the swatches on the photo numbered?? Thanks!

Christi D. - Wednesday Mar 7th 2012 11:46pm
I am so mad I didn't buy one of these now when I was at the YSL counter a couple weeks ago when I got my tax return and went on a big shopping spree..I got the touche eclat and their new gel blush instead! I didn't like the color they had out, but I should've asked if they had other colors. I will definitely be checking these out, thanks Lisa! Speaking of ur recs, I am still trying to find Becca Pearl shimmering skin perfector, no stores anywhere around me in the States carry Becca! XX from the States

What a shame. I went to check it straight after I read this blog and the colours all looked too intense on me. I tried at least ten. The make up artist in YSL couldn't believe how much the colour changed on me. I was so determined to get one I got no4 and it still looks too dressy for daytime. How it changes from a soft plummy colour to a brown red on my lips I will never understand. Texture, glossiness and staying power are brilliant. Perhaps I could try applying it differently.

G. Turell - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 5:00pm
Lovely textures! Great products. Lisa I agree that it would be great a If you could do a gothic-chic look with these. Dark lips and maybe understated eyebrows or eyes with natural looking pale skin. I love this look that has been such a trend lately. Thank you for everything. xxxx

Barbara La Rocco - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 4:11pm
Hi Lisa. First off- THANK YOU! I'm going to work in one of the biggest indoor art fairs in europe coming up in mid March. My question is: how do I make my skin look fresh in those terrible and probably diverse sources of light? In our stand we have mostly halogen spots so... Do I use lots of brighteners on my checkbones or a light hand? Luminous foundation or mat? Lots of bright blusher? Oh its all so confusing, can you shine some light on this?

Rena - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 12:39pm
Hi Lisa, can you do a look with with these? I am correctly obsessed with the "glam goth" trends as seen on Givenchy, Rochas and YSL Fall 2012 runway x

I love this product. i have 2 colours and love them.

Evelyn - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 7:14am
Hi Lisa! Thanks as always for your awesome suggestions. I had a couple of questions (some of which I asked in the previous video but I think they got lost, my apologies) Could you suggest how to apply this as a stain? The applicator throws me off. Also, you used Givenchy's Lip and Cheek Balm in your previous video - do you have an alternative cheaper product? I've read the container doesn't last very long. Also, what primer would you recommend using with the new Chanel Aqua Lumiere compact? I'm sorry it's so many questions but so far every product you've recommended has worked brilliantly for me. Have you heard of any products that would make someone's face less dark (in comparison to my neck, my face is a few shades darker but I don't tan)? Also, what's your opinion on the Clarisonic Mia? I am so looking forward to your new column because you'll be revealing so many more trade secrets, we can stop bothering you here ^^ THANK YOU!

Cat Santos - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 4:41am
Hi Lisa, i will definitely try to check out these lips stains this weekend. I am curious of what do you think about Armani foundations??? I have used them for so long but I am surprised that you never use them for any of your tutorials. I also use Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua on days that I want just light foundation. Anyways, I am so happy I found you about 2 months ago when I was checking Chanel's website... So far I have watched all your tutorials and learned so much!!! Thanks and keep on posting...love, Cat

Paloma - Tuesday Mar 6th 2012 2:36am
Just purchased no4 Mauve Pigment from Sephora and it is the *perfect* "natural lip shade + oomph" color for me! It looks wonderfully natural and not overdone at all. Thank you for recommending such a great product.

Nicole - Monday Mar 5th 2012 8:35pm
I love them, I was really exhited and got 4 of them ! the n°11 (perfect blue red), n°12 ( a bitten lip shade), the n°17 ( a cool blue pink) and the n°19 (the perfect nude)

Camille - Monday Mar 5th 2012 8:26pm
Hi, Lisa! I love you and your blog! Offtopic - can you please advice a concealer for awful reddish-blue dark circles (which would be strong enough to conceal and not come into fine lines) and pale skin? (I use Bourjois healthy mix foundation in 51). Thanks a lot

Céline - Monday Mar 5th 2012 8:07pm
I have the 13 and I love it! I never really wore lipstick or gloss before because I hated that you had to reapply every 30 minutes! But those really lasts all day (if you don't rub your mouth with tableclothes at lunch!); I want to buy a "just bitten"/natural real color but don't know wich one! You said the number 2 but is called "brun glacé" and looks like a real BROWN on the sephora website... can you confirm? or add the number of each one on your pictures, that would be a great help for everybody I think. Thanks again for everything, I could't live without your beauty advices, seriously!

Jax - Monday Mar 5th 2012 7:14pm
Disaster, purchased one today (No 14) but find it really drying on my lips. Will slather some 8hr on tonight and see how it goes tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

Claudia M - Monday Mar 5th 2012 6:49pm
Hey Lisa, thanks so much for making such a great resource for us make up fiends :) I'm wondering, though, could you label the numbers/ colors with the shades above? I'm thinking about purchasing one of these, but it's hard to tell how these swatches line up with the way they're presented on the website. Thank you.

klimtmoment - Monday Mar 5th 2012 6:19pm
Initially I thought I liked it too but then it dried out my lips horribly. I'm glad it works for you and most though.

Floriana - Monday Mar 5th 2012 5:42pm
These stains are absolutely awesome! I have the #15 Pinky/fusia color and just love it! I can't wait to get some more. Our local Sephora's have them now for anyone living in NY.

Hi Lisa, I have been looking for a substitute for the Chanel Lacque in Dragon (#75) which is apparently discontinued before I could get my hands on it. These look mighty similar. Do you think it is close to the Chanel one and if any of the colors is close to Dragon? Thanks!

Sarah cunningham - Monday Mar 5th 2012 3:23pm
I can not wait to try these on and maybe treat myself. You are so good at your profession. I'm starting a Diploma course in Theatre, Media and Fashion Makeup very soon and hope to one day to be half as good as you! Sarah.x

Dafne Ortiz - Monday Mar 5th 2012 2:21pm
I have to admit that I literally RUN to my YSL counter to buy these as soon as you recommended them....and I LOVE THEM!!!! I purchased #5 Rouge Vintage, it is a very pretty colour... I went to the movies, drink coke, eat popcorn, and after all that my lips looked exactly the same as 3 hous before when I applied YSL glossy stain. Thank you Lisa!!!

Ladymoonlight - Monday Mar 5th 2012 1:38pm
Totally agree with all you've said. These could actually replace all the lipsticks and glosses I've got!

Dranna - Monday Mar 5th 2012 1:16pm
Lisa, These do look great and would be perfect for someone who'd like a good lip look but not an OTT one whilst having to do school runs; obviously I look forward to seeing a swatch or tutorial video from you. I'm fairly new to your blog and don't often comment but I absolutely love watching your tutorials and reading your blog. I admire your love of make-up and thanks for showing us all how to use it! You are invaluable and every new video is like a birthday present. LOVE YOU!

Suleena - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:55pm
It is lovely but it is not available here in Thailand. We do have Suqqu brand here where I can buy some favorite products recommended by you in the film.

Doña - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:21pm
Absolutely love it already. ps: I just bought on your recent advice the new Ever Matte foundation by Clarins. Very impressive. I just love it. Thanks so much for all your advice! and I like when you quote FRench brands :-)

Kira - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:16pm
I'm so glad you love these Lisa because so do i! I have number 10 but really want to try all the colours and plan on getting another one soon! I'm quite pale with blue eyes and brown hair, any suggestions for my next shade?!xxx

@Noy wow your boyfriend is super talented X

Noy - Monday Mar 5th 2012 9:53am
Hello Lisa, I was so excited to see you've written about this stain because my boyfriend had a tough time working on the animation advert (director of the set making and director of the photography). Well at least he worked hard for an excellent product !

Jennyn - Monday Mar 5th 2012 6:56am
I have these in 7 & 15 & love them both! Planning on picking up more soon. This is such a long lasting moisturizing lip stain. It lasted me through a 12 hr graveyard shift & that was with eating & drinking, only reapplied once!! Pricy, but worth every cent, in my opinion : )

Kickisar - Monday Mar 5th 2012 6:52am
Lovely colors! Is the fruity, sweet YSL-scent there? That is what keeps me away from the lovely lipproducts from the brand. I can't stand it! Is it mango or something..? I hope theese are scent/tastefree or have a new, fresher taste!

I bought #12 for my vacation to Mexico last week..bought it from Sephora in the US! I NEVER (OK, rarely spend that kind of money on makeup [$32]), but it is truly orgasmic! Completely different from any other product, beautiful color, easy application, long lasting....I'm actually planning on purchasing another....or two....xox

sona sharma - Monday Mar 5th 2012 4:55am
oh i love the packaging coz i can c what color is in it.mst high end cosmetic brands for example chanel products,i hve to open to c wat color gloss is in.

Sabariah - Monday Mar 5th 2012 3:00am
wow, they look so delicious and so tempting. As you mentioned its moisturising, I would like to try, because in winter I can't wear anything on my lips except lip balm because of dryness even winter is almost over now.

Grace H - Monday Mar 5th 2012 1:54am
I would love to see these on your lips. The colors are gorgeous in the tube. Curious how they look on actual lips. Maybe we'll see these in some upcoming videos! Eekkk!!! I should've started saving like yesterday.

deb m - Monday Mar 5th 2012 1:01am
These, apparently, have not hit the States, yet. Cannot find them anywhere.

Cal - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:39am
I love the pic with the hearts! These do look amazing. x

jess - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:35am
Hey Lisa, love the blog and tutorials you do. After watching how to apply false eyelashes you got me hooked onto the demi whispies by ardell :) Can you recommend any other ones that can be used more than once (eyelure break too easily), have slightly more volume and length but don't look too over the top. Also about the YSL do they last through drinking and eating as i have found that other lip stains don't actually. Plus could you pair these with a lipstick to make it last longer or would you where them just on there own? Thank you xox

bella - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:31am
Hi Lisa, which of these colours would you recommend for dark skin? xxx

Hi Lisa I am new to your site and have been watching your tutorials. For someone who has spent a fortune on the wrong products over the years and products i just dont know how to use i am finding your site invaluable. Ive bought some of your recomendations and they have proved to be spot on. Many Thanks

Lisa Eldridge - Monday Mar 5th 2012 12:01am
@John no i didnt? x @Jennifer no make-up is worth going broke for! These are not limited edition and are out for the long term so no rush, you can pick one up anytime x

BippyBee - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:58pm
OOH -I buy the where?

Jennifer Smith - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:54pm
Hi Lisa! Love your blog and vids. I've always wanted to try YSL so I think you may have convinced me. Not sure if that's good or bad...good for me, bad for my wallet. ;-)

John Wharff - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:48pm
Hi Lisa! I use the Anti-Cernes Concealer from YSL. It's very Pigmented with a Creamy Texture which is perfect for hiding imperfections. Did you get my Tweets?

Annabelle - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:47pm
Thank you for your answer, I was thinking Laura Mercier and Nars but had forgotten the Liz Earle skin tint !

maddy - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:47pm
I con't care if thats a whole weeks money for me, I am getting one!- thanks lisa, your the best :)

Lisa Eldridge - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:39pm
@annabelle you should check out the Liz Earl skin tint as it contains only natural ingredients and has a nice hydrating feeling on the skin. Not sure if the palest shade will be pale enough for you but have a look x

Shruti - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:31pm
@lisaeldridge I am impressed that No 7 doesn't photoshop their beauty images. I did not know that. They should advertise that more! I think they will find that a lot of customers will be drawn to that. Thanks for replying.

Nadia - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:25pm
Hi Lisa!I am so pleased to see your blog about YSL Glossy stains.I thought that I am the only one being soooo obsessed with these....well,welcome to the club!I honestly can not get enough of these gorgeous, low maintenance but long wearing lip colors.I already own 6 of them...yes, they are expensive but in my opinion they worth every penny. The more I see of these, the more I fall in love.Absolutely stunning.Number 12,13 and 15 are my favorites. :-))

Annabelle - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:24pm
I have been looking for the perfect bitten lip shade for ages, I definitely have to go and have a look at this ! I will try it when I will go to Boots to buy the No7 pink cream blusher that you designed, it is gorgeous ! By the way, what tinted moisturizer or foundation would you recommend for a very pale and dehydrated skin with acne ? Thanks a lot, I LOVE your blog and videos, they always make my wishlist longer !

patperet - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:23pm
Is No 17 very bright? I don`t like very bright colours on my lips (very thin lips) and was wondering if I should buy No17 or maybe No18... Thanks, Lisa!!! (funny cause the first time I saw pictures of this product I did think it was a nail polish)

Lisa eldridge - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:22pm
@patperet No17 is quite a bluish, lilacy pink, quite bright but not hugely so. Whereas 18 is very pale baby pastel pink. You would definitely need to try them on to see which looked best against your skin and colouring x

Lisa Eldridge - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:15pm
@elisa two brands which have good green based lotions you can use before make-up to reduce the appearance of redness are La Roche Posay and Avene. They are French drugstore brands, available across Europe and in the US but i'm not sure if you can get them in Argentina. Try googling for stockists near you x

@Shrunti ironically done but still scary! Good that women know and can make a joke of how much of it goes on ... especially in beauty advertising where its rife (mascara and skincare ads particularly). I do sense a backlash coming within the industry though. At No7 we completely stopped photoshopping all of our beauty images some time ago and i'm noticing less in other areas. Lets hope this trend continues. I hate overly photoshopped plastic looking images, they are beginning to look dated and are just yuck! X

Love these so much. My favorite is no7 Corail Aquatique. Such gentle coral shade. Thanks for letting us know your opinion too. Love all your videos. Thanks for sharing. xxx

elisa - Sunday Mar 4th 2012 11:09pm
hey Lisa, how are you? i'm Elisa from Argentina, i'm one of your fans and i was wondering, u have made a video about how to apply concealer if someone has acne, i don't have.. or it is not easy to see at least, and i heard about green concealer and that product could help!, could you tell me if it is ok if i use it? and maybe recomend me some of your favorite product? because i'm 19 and i want my skin looks as young as it is, and be safe and healthy, please answer me. Ohh and let me tell you too that here is kinda difficult to get some product, thank you, and please keep uploading videos, they really help us. Good Luck ♥

Yes it was me on twitter, was'nt sure if you would reply, sooo glad you did and thank-you for the advice and for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. I will be checking out the glossy stain's for sure. Just want to say you are an amazing make-up artist and you always look stunning. :)

Lisa, I love you. You are like a breath of fresh air. The grace and dignity with which you present yourself in your videos is also reflected in your makeup looks. Not only are they superbly unique but they always look very modern. This has been very useful to me, someone who loves the idea of makeup but is afraid of looking dated or too made-up. Thank you for doing these videos. On a different note, I wanted to share this video with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmyxmvJBjRk. Do let me know what you think. Love, Shruti

@Maria I see you are joining me in a beauty swoon moment lol! Totally agree, the long lasting element, the feeling on the lips and the look make them unique x

I bought it last Thursday! (shade no.12 and will definitely get more...). It's totally amazing! I went just to try it out and was so stunned that bought it immediately. Such an amazing feeling on the lips without getting in the lines around your mouth. Its shine stays there for hours. Couldn't believe it. A trully unique product!

@Yvonne i think I've just answered you on twitter but just in case that wasnt you .... the VLA comapct is not best suited to oily and acne prone skin. Its best for combination, dry and normal. X @BibbyBee anywhere they sell YSL beauty, so departments stores worldwide x

These actually look very similar to Bare Escentuals' Pretty Amazing lip products, which are lovely! I'll have to have a play when I see them :)
