Gallery Update - Fierce Block Brows

Monday 16th Jan 2012 8:42am - Comments (35) - Back to the blog

This editorial I did for Turkish Vogue recently is all about extreme fierce brows, glossy skin and major highlighting and contouring. A mini homage to the early 90's androgeny and the 'blocked out' brows of Rei Kawakubo's Comme Des Garcons girls and Peter Lindberg.

Raw, natural textured glossy skin against strong, artificial looking brows creates a really good contrast.

In reality, this coming season is all about strong, full brows (not as severe as this obviously!) and as many of you know, I hate thin, mean looking brows anyway so anything that encourages women to step away from the tweezers is good in my book.

I used fluidline gel liner by Mac in black to draw on the brows. The skin was glossed up with Mac's face gloss and Tom Fords Cream contour and highlight palette was used to further shape and define.

To see how to do a more wearable version of this look see my boyish make-up tutorial.

Dec06Leigh This is ralley useful information, however, I've been googling and trying to find the perfect shape to make my eyebrows friendlier'. I've often had people tell me that I look unfriendly and unapproachable. Some of this is because I have a naturally thoughtful' expression (a bit frowny) and I think my brows are quite low, especially when I'm tired; I'd like to be able to shape them into a more happy' expression. You've given some good advice on what NOT to do, but can you help me decide what I SHOULD do? Please help

stri-linga - Wednesday Jan 18th 2012 10:28pm

Sometimes I go crazy editorial with my brows and it feels great :)

Anna Lohi - Wednesday Jan 18th 2012 10:12pm

This look is gorgeous on so many levels. I find myself weirdly attracted to the model :D You are by far my biggest idol when it comes to creating flawless yet edgy makeup. I wish you would open up a school....

frida - Wednesday Jan 18th 2012 9:25pm

love the contrast between the harsh eyebrows and the femininety of the rest of the make up. i also have one request and that's that i would love to see some turtorials from the award season like from golden globe or when the acadamy award comes. thank you

@Christi D Nars blushers are usually pretty good, although I find that most powders need to be touched up after a few hours. Would you ever consider using a liquid/cream instead? The MUFE HD Blush ones are great and very long lasting x

linda - Wednesday Jan 18th 2012 5:11pm

lisa - could you do make up for people with glasses? - I am very nearsighted and I never feel good when I wear my glasses.... all my best from Iceland!

Dew - Wednesday Jan 18th 2012 11:54am

Fabulous contouring, Lisa! I've read about Tom Ford's shading colour being comparable to the Chanel mousse thingy. Do you agree? I'd save a bundle buying the Chanel one instead!

Jeanette - Tuesday Jan 17th 2012 7:27pm

Very beautiful contouring! What is on her nails?

Alicia - Tuesday Jan 17th 2012 7:15pm

This is one thing that I would love to try but I just don't think particularly heavy brows suit me...even in the more subtle 'boyish' look! Looks awesome though x

Jane S - Tuesday Jan 17th 2012 6:17pm

She reminds me of Tilda Swinton, who I adore! Totally agree with you about over-plucked brows, especially the ones that look like --gasp!--sperm, with a round bit and a skinny tail!

Christi D. - Tuesday Jan 17th 2012 7:28am

Strong, fierce, bold and different! I would expect nothing less! I know I always say this, but you rock Lisa! <3 this.** Btw, off topic, but what are some very long lasting powder blushes you could recommend? I have normal to dry skin, not oily in the slightest, but I can't seem to find a long lasting powder blush..I have NARS & Mac, both fade after 2 hrs!! Would really appreciate any recs that are available in the U.S. ---Thanks and big XX from the States!!

Fatima Batool - Tuesday Jan 17th 2012 12:13am

You are simply a genius......

It is very andro, and may be hard for some to pull off (at least, women that are middle aged moms!, LOL! I think if one has a less fine bone structure it might look too harsh during the day - perhaps a finer bone structure would allow it to look feminine enough to look attractive. For clubbing, it would be a look that would feel right at home.

I HAVE THESE BROWS NATURALLY !! thank you i never realized it could be 'a look' .. Thanks

esther - Monday Jan 16th 2012 8:47pm

She looks fierce but feminine at the same time, a great job Lisa!

Amy - Monday Jan 16th 2012 7:53pm

wow! so fresh for spring! I have to admit though I hate the bold brow trend mostly because mine are very thin, blonde and patchy! (with medium ashy brown hair sooo weird anyways...)so it takes alot of work to get natural brows going lol... but I do it anyways everyday so going a shade darker for a bolder look isnt all that hard I guess hehe :P

MissSylvouille - Monday Jan 16th 2012 6:26pm

Absolutely genious !! Love love love :D

Michal - Monday Jan 16th 2012 5:31pm

This is such an interesting look! I love that the lips are still a little feminine, and the nails are definitely all glamour. It's more layered than just the androgyny look, which is awesome.

Maria - Monday Jan 16th 2012 3:34pm

I would forever love you (as if I don't already ;) if you could do a video tutorial on taking care of eyebrows and more importantly, how to deal with those evil ones that you said not to pluck (above the eyebrows hairs, basically). I know you mentioned dyeing them but I have no clue how and what exactly that means! :)

sunnyday - Monday Jan 16th 2012 2:38pm

I have naturally thick browns too! I'm so grateful for it...yeah XD This look is great but I think I wouldn't go out with this brows, it's too @.@ dimensional.. Haha, i will made it more soft indeed! Love your work as always.

Rachell - Monday Jan 16th 2012 2:03pm

Beautiful. Not over done in the least bit, but it has that strong silent look. Im loving your work

Dimitris Mentes - Monday Jan 16th 2012 1:50pm

The contouring and highlighting is magnificent. Even though it's so full on it's masterfully done!

JENNIFER ROSELLEN - Monday Jan 16th 2012 1:32pm

LOVE THIS

Lisa Eldridge - Monday Jan 16th 2012 1:32pm

@prea i have a video for a wearable version of this look on my site (link above)... with some contouring and highlighting its possible to do a version to suit your particular face shape x

Fatma - Monday Jan 16th 2012 1:21pm

I'm from Qatar, and I love your work Lisa!!

Mariko - Monday Jan 16th 2012 1:17pm

How to grow thicker brows? Mine were trimmed (is this the right word?) only once and I havent touched them ever since, but they are less and less hair every year :( Fortunately they are medium thickness.

Maarja - Monday Jan 16th 2012 12:55pm

I love it! She`s gorgeous.

SeeSee - Monday Jan 16th 2012 12:31pm

Very cool. Actually my brows are very boyish ones, and I have had a hard time making them look more girlish. However, I also hate ultra thin brows as well as shaved/waxed ones that are replaced by a thin line. They absolutely wouldn't work in my face. Nevertheless, I would love to have more input on eyebrows, on how to reshape them if they are as stubborn as mine are.

EM - Monday Jan 16th 2012 12:24pm

Cheekbones in the Dakotas--my favorite!

Prea - Monday Jan 16th 2012 12:24pm

Thanks Lisa, this look is great! But how can you use this look if you have a rounder or more oval face. This model has great bone structure, her face is very angular, despite the contouring.

Monday Jan 16th 2012 12:05pm

it's so cool ..

Faye - Monday Jan 16th 2012 11:52am

I love this look Lisa, it's so strong! I love your work x
